Coherence Therapy
Your patterns make sense.
You’ve probably tried to change this already. You understand where it comes from, you’ve set the intentions, you’ve tried to think your way out of it, and it’s still here.
That’s not a failure of willpower. It’s a clue.
Coherence Therapy starts from a simple idea: symptoms and patterns aren’t random, and they aren’t evidence that something is wrong with you. They’re the result of something your mind learned a long time ago, often outside your awareness, to protect you, keep you connected, or keep you safe. From the inside, the pattern still makes sense. It’s just working from old information.
How I use it in our work together
Coherence Therapy is one of the core approaches I draw on — any other modality I use can be used within its frame: ART, EMDR, parts work (IFS), Brainspotting, and Emotionally Focused Therapy for couples. Here’s what it looks like in practice:
1. We get curious about the pattern, not at it.
Instead of trying to fix or get rid of what you’re struggling with, we ask what it’s doing for you. What would be at risk if it changed?
2. We follow it into your felt experience.
This isn’t only a thinking exercise. We notice what happens in your body and what you feel in the moment, and we trace it back to the emotional learning underneath.
3. We bring the deeper belief into the light.
Often there’s an old, deeply held conclusion about yourself, other people, or the world that has been quietly running the show. Putting it into words, and feeling the truth of it, is often a powerful moment.
4. We create a new experience.
When the old learning is fully felt and a new, contradicting experience is brought in alongside it, the brain can update what it expects. This is called memory reconsolidation. Change comes from the lived experience, not from forcing yourself to think differently.
Why this approach
It’s non-pathologizing. Nothing about you needs to be fixed or eliminated.
It works at the root. Rather than managing symptoms, we address the emotional learning that keeps them going.
It involves your whole system. Head, body, and heart all take part, because lasting change needs all three.
Coherence Therapy may be a good fit if you:
Keep repeating a pattern in relationships, work, or with yourself, even though you know better
Feel anxious, stuck, or shut down in ways that don’t respond to “just thinking differently”
Have done talk therapy and gained insight, but still don’t feel different
Are curious about why you do what you do, without judgment
This is a way of working, not a script, and I tailor it to you. It’s often woven together with other approaches depending on what you need.
I offer Coherence Therapy to individuals in Pasadena and online throughout California, Virginia, Washington, and Florida
