If no one helped you make sense of your inner world, you learned to scan and second-guess yourself instead:

The result is anxiety that is chronic, low-grade, and never quite settles, along with doubt about what you feel, want, or need. Rumination and overthinking become a way of staying prepared. It often happens in families that were loving and well-intentioned, which is why it’s so easy to miss.

Understanding the pattern usually isn’t enough to change it. In therapy, we work with the nervous system directly to rebuild your inner compass, so steadiness becomes something you experience, not just something you understand.

Therapy for Anxiety & OCD

How anxiety and self-doubt show up

A chronic, low-grade uneasiness that is hard to explain

Finding it hard to trust what you feel, want, or need

A mind and body that stays on alert even when nothing is wrong

Overthinking as a way of staying prepared for the next bad thing to happen

Difficulty identifying feelings, or a sense of being disconnected from yourself

Difficulty making decisions, trusting your own judgment, or knowing what you want

Many of my clients are accomplished, capable, and highly self-aware. They’ve often tried therapy, books, and self-reflection, and can explain their anxiety well. They want it to actually settle.

How OCD can present as

Intrusive thoughts, images, or urges that feel alarming and out of character

Checking, reassurance-seeking, or mental/behavioral rituals that bring brief relief, then demand more

A heavy sense of responsibility, as if something terrible will happen if you let your guard down

A need for certainty because trusting your own feelings and judgment never felt safe

Distance from your emotions, with the distress showing up as obsessions and compulsions instead

Shame about the thoughts and rituals, and secrecy about how much of your life they take up

For many of my clients, OCD is not random. It began as a way for a young nervous system to feel safe when emotional needs went unseen or feelings had nowhere to go. The obsessions and rituals make emotional sense, and insight alone rarely loosens them. My clients want it to actually settle.
